Graduation Ceremony Protocols
July 9, 2020

Dear Graduates and Parents/Guardians,

We are in the final stages of preparing for our socially-distant graduation ceremony on July 9.  Each senior who registered has received specific information as well as their ceremony time (either 11 AM or 6 PM). To execute this commencement as safely as possible, it is imperative that graduates and parents alike read each item carefully:

COVID-19 Signs/Symptoms 

  • If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 fourteen days before July 9, you must not attend.  
  • We expect all attendees and graduates to self monitor their health and refrain from attending the ceremony if they experience any COVID-19 symptoms as per the CDC GUIDELINES.

Required Protocol

  • It is highly recommended that graduates and their two guests arrive in one car.  
  • All graduates, spectators, and staff are required to wear masks.
  • Graduates and their two guests must arrive at the same time.  There will be no entry for the two guests without the graduate or vice versa. This is how the check in process will take place.  
  • The following are not permitted:  large bags, strollers, balloons, bull horns, large flower arrangements or any other items that could impede view or pose a safety hazard.  
  • Graduates will be standing 6 feet apart before the ceremony and seated six feet apart during the ceremony.
  • Bleachers have been marked (blue tape) for  social distancing of spectators.


  • Arrival time for 11 AM Ceremony:  Arrive between 10 and 10:30 AM
  • Arrival time for 6 PM Ceremony:  Arrive between 5 and 5:30 PM
  • Upon arrival
    • Graduates and their two guests will check in outside of the stadium by the double purple gates.  While on line, please socially distance and wear masks.  
    • Only Garfield issued caps, gowns, stoles, honor cords and/or pins can be worn. Caps cannot be decorated. 
    • Any additional items will be given to spectators to hold until the conclusion of the ceremony.

  • Only Garfield issued caps, gown, stoles, honor cords and/or pins can be worn.  Caps cannot be decorated. Any non-school items will be given to spectators to hold during the ceremony. 
  • Under your cap and gown, graduates should dress appropriately and comfortably. High heels are not recommended for the field and for the stage. The field and the stage can be difficult to navigate in heels/platforms.


  • In case of inclement weather, a decision to postpone the event will be made no later than one hour prior to the start of the ceremony

End of the Ceremony

  • Social distancing must be maintained throughout the ceremony as well as at the conclusion of the ceremony.
  • Graduates will recess and meet their guests at their cars.
